Hello, my friends!  Today’s post is the first in the series:  Ask Your Bestie.  Today I’m answering the question: “What should I do if I’m in recovery but I don’t like Alcoholics Anonymous meetings?” In other words, does every addict need to attend AA to achieve a successful recovery?
Having worked a great deal with people in various places of their recovery journey, I tell them that there really isn’t a one-size-fits-all program for recovery.  A lot of people love AA, and it has been hugely successful for good reason.  But I’ve met just as many people who are turned off by it for one reason or another.  I always tell people, “you are in charge of your own recovery.”  So if you hate AA or if it triggers you (or is otherwise not working for you), by all means don’t feel that you have to go.
I would say that if you don’t like AA meetings, though, you would want to try something else.  Meeting with a therapist, a clergy-person, or someone else you trust is a good place to start.  It is best to find someone you can have ongoing conversations and accountability with around your struggles with substance use.  Group therapy is another option.  Regardless of what route you go, please do reach out to someone for help ASAP.  You’ll feel so much better once you do!

Lots of love to you all today!
