I’ve been a “planner” practically since I was born. My parents love to tell stories of how type-A I have been since childhood – sticking to a schedule, being one with my school planner, and planning vacation itineraries down to the minute. Similarly, I have always loved setting goals and intentions, especially at the start of a brand new year. I have habitually made lists of what I loved about the previous year, and what I want to be different in the year ahead. These practices help me to name what I want to claim, so to speak.
Lately, though, I’ve become a bigger fan of mindfulness, and applying it to my daily life – peering at my schedule at the beginning of the day, and yet giving myself permission to cross off the things that won’t actually serve me, or that I simply don’t have time for. These practices help me to create space for self-care and trust the voice inside me that has long been encouraging me to go with my gut, and live in the here and now.
My hope for us in 2019 is that we will strike a balance between the two camps – that you will feel encouraged to dream and imagine every wondrous possibility for the year ahead, and yet you won’t feel so bound by them or rigidly attached to them that you derail when things don’t work out as planned. Here’s to you doing you in 2019 and beyond! I’m so thankful for the opportunity to journey with you.
