Between navigating trauma-informed parenting, balancing the needs of multiple children, and dealing with the emotions that come with the foster and adoption process, it’s easy to put yourself last. But here’s the truth: if you’re running on empty, you can’t give your best to your children.

Self-care isn’t selfish—it’s necessary. And I’m not talking about bubble baths and spa days (though those are nice too!). Real, meaningful self-care for foster and adoptive moms goes deeper. It’s about setting yourself up to feel emotionally, mentally, and physically supported so you can keep showing up with love and patience.

Here are five self-care strategies every foster and adoptive mom needs to know.

1. Prioritize Your Emotional Well-Being

Foster and adoptive parenting comes with a rollercoaster of emotions. Your child may be processing grief, trauma, or identity struggles, and that means you’ll experience secondhand emotions as well. One of the most critical ways to care for yourself is to tend to your own emotional needs.

How to Do It:

  • Therapy or Coaching: Having a neutral person to process your experiences with can be a game-changer. Whether it’s a therapist, a trauma-informed coach, or even a foster-adoptive mom support group, having a safe space to express your emotions is key.
  • Journaling: Taking just five minutes a day to write down your thoughts, feelings, and wins can help you process what’s going on and relieve mental stress.
  • Set Boundaries: You don’t have to engage in every conversation or educate everyone about foster care or adoption. If certain topics drain you, give yourself permission to opt out.

Why It Matters:

When you’re emotionally depleted, it’s harder to respond with patience and empathy to your child’s needs. Prioritizing your mental health allows you to show up as a more present and regulated parent.

2. Make Time for Rest (Yes, Even When Life is Busy!)

You are juggling a lot—appointments, therapy sessions, school issues, and the everyday chaos of parenting. It’s easy to fall into the trap of always being “on.” But if you’re not getting enough rest, your body and brain are going to let you know through burnout, exhaustion, and irritability.

How to Do It:

  • Set a “No More To-Dos” Time: Pick a time in the evening when you stop responding to emails, texts, or thinking about foster care logistics.
  • Create a Restful Nighttime Routine: Try turning off screens 30 minutes before bed, drinking tea, or reading a book that isn’t parenting-related.
  • Take Micro-Breaks: Even five minutes of deep breathing, stretching, or listening to calming music can reset your energy levels.

Why It Matters:

When you’re exhausted, everything feels overwhelming. Rest gives your nervous system a chance to reset so you can tackle challenges with a clearer mind.

3. Lean on a Support System (You Don’t Have to Do It Alone!)

Foster and adoptive parenting can feel isolating. Even well-meaning family and friends might not fully understand the challenges you face. That’s why having a strong support system is crucial.

How to Do It:

  • Find a Foster/Adoptive Mom Community: Whether it’s an in-person support group or an online community (like my Fearless Fostering group!), having a safe space to vent, ask questions, and get encouragement is so important.
  • Ask for Help: If you’re drowning in responsibilities, delegate. Can a friend watch the kids for an hour? Can your partner take over dinner one night a week? Accepting help is not a sign of weakness—it’s a sign of wisdom.
  • Connect with Other Moms: Even just texting a fellow foster/adoptive mom can remind you that you’re not in this alone.

Why It Matters:

Parenting in isolation is draining. Having people who “get it” makes the journey feel lighter and less lonely.

4. Set Realistic Expectations (You Are Not Superwoman)

One of the biggest causes of stress for foster and adoptive moms is the pressure to do everything perfectly. You want to help your child heal, navigate behaviors, maintain relationships, advocate for their needs—and somehow also run a household and maintain your own sanity.

Here’s the truth: you don’t have to do it all.

How to Do It:

  • Lower the Bar on Perfection: Your house doesn’t need to be spotless. Your meals don’t have to be gourmet. Your child doesn’t need every single possible therapy session. Focus on progress, not perfection.
  • Say No Without Guilt: If a commitment doesn’t serve you or your family, it’s okay to decline.
  • Be Kind to Yourself: Instead of beating yourself up for mistakes, practice self-compassion. Remind yourself: I am doing my best, and that is enough.

Why It Matters:

The more pressure you put on yourself, the faster you burn out. When you set realistic expectations, you give yourself space to actually enjoy parenting.

5. Find Small Moments of Joy

Yes, foster and adoptive parenting can be hard. But it’s also filled with moments of beauty, laughter, and connection. One of the most overlooked self-care strategies is simply choosing to find joy in the small things.

How to Do It:

  • Celebrate Small Wins: Did your child make eye contact with you today? Did they laugh at your joke? Did you get five minutes of peace? Those moments matter.
  • Do Something Just for You: Whether it’s painting, reading, crafting, or even dancing in the kitchen, doing something that brings you joy is essential.
  • Focus on Connection Over Perfection: Your child won’t remember if the dishes were done, but they’ll remember that you snuggled them while watching their favorite show.

Why It Matters:

When you focus on what’s going right, it helps balance out the hard moments. Joy is what keeps you going.

Final Thoughts

Foster and adoptive moms, you matter too. Your mental, emotional, and physical well-being aren’t just nice add-ons—they’re the foundation of your ability to love and care for your children.
