How Your Fear Fuels Your Judgment (and what to do about it)

Not long ago, I posted a video to my IGTV and Facebook page entitled, “What it means to hold space for others.” It’s a topic I have been investigating in my own life of late, and I know it’s one that many of you have asked me for more info on. In fact, the entire July issue of My Self Care Bestie is all about how to hold space for others and be less judgmental of them.

“When you hold space for someone, you bring your entire presence to them. You walk along with them without judgment, sharing their journey to an unknown destination. Yet you’re completely willing to end up wherever they need to go. You give your heart, let go of control, and offer unconditional support.”

Lynn Houka

Truthfully, the number one reason we judge, rather than hold space for others is because we are afraid. Maybe we’re afraid that our rights are being infringed upon in some way. It could be that we fear being manipulated or controlled by someone. Or perhaps it’s that we are anxious that if we simply hold space for someone, that makes us vulnerable, which isn’t something we are quite comfortable with.

It’s time to figure out what fears are keeping you from being able to enter into relationships and situations non-judgmentally. Answer the questions on this FREE worksheet (from the July issue of My Self Care Bestie) and notice what rises to the surface for you emotionally and spiritually as you begin to decipher the exact triggers for your fear, and therefore your judgment.

When you’ve completed the exercise, please spend some time mindfully breathing, meditating, praying, or practicing stillness. Give yourself grace and space to feel whatever arises fully. And be patient with yourself as you do this work, my friend.

And if you’re looking for another great resource on non-judgment of yourself and others, check out Judgment Detox by Gabrielle Bernstein. I’m listening to it on Audible right now, and it’s challenging me so much!

Much love, my Besties! Happy 1st of July! 🙂
